Background

Jim Mersfelder
Principal

Jim is an experienced business executive in software technology, electronics and financial services.  He has a track record   of over 40 years as an industry leader conceptualizing and developing multi-million dollar businesses while controlling costs and creating strong management teams.  He spent many years successfully starting and growing profitable high tech companies in both the venture and the corporate environments.

As the co-founder of OMR Systems a software firm he implemented a continuous software improvement process.  This process linked OMR’s international institutional trading clients to its Princeton NJ based client services and software engineering staff, allowing clients to follow new market trading trends while controlling their financial risk.  The acceptance of this process and the product that resulted led to the explosive and highly profitable growth of OMR from a local provider into an international software firm with offices in New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, providing its products and services throughout the financial centers in the Americas, Europe and Asia.  OMR was sold to ADP for 10 times EBITDA.

At Citibank, as a senior executive, Jim managed a major business re-engineering process within the back-office while running the 1,800 person unit which serviced over 3,000 domestic correspondent bank clients.  The unit marketed and sold the delivery of domestic funds transfer, collections, letters of credit, loan processing, cash letters, stock transfer and business account processing.  The re-engineering process included several major automation projects which reduced staff levels and operational costs.  The multi-year re-engineering process saved over $40 million in operating expenses while improving transaction processing accuracy and customer service response timeliness.   The success of the work in New York led to Jim establishing a new nationwide Citibank subsidiary which leveraged these solutions outside of the bank.  Within two years the unit was a profitable $15 million enterprise with over 300 employees servicing non-Citibank banking institutions.

Prior to the Citibank experience Jim managed the Sweda division of Litton Industries’ Project Management Office in addition to the Quality & Reliability functions of a $147 million business.  The division was a market leader in developing, manufacturing, and installing breakthrough electronic retail point-of-sale systems, scanners, and networks in North America and Europe.

Jim’s business background includes board positions on public and private companies, all focused on the software space.  He is an active adviser to several early stage software companies.  His education as an engineer from Stevens Institute of Technology, an MBA from the Wharton School in industrial management and finance as well as attendance at Harvard’s Executive Education program provides him with a rich background to offer our firm’s clients.
